- Annotation: This article examines stable prepositional-nominal constructions of the pattern ”v + Loc, pl/sg” that denote a person’s state and function as a predicate in 16th–17th century Russian official and common texts. The study analyses 78 such constructions identified in approximately 600 usage contexts from historical dictionaries and corpora. The ”v + Loc, pl/sg” pattern is shown to be productive in forming predicative units in Modern Russian, which reflects the historical loss of spatial meaning and development of state semantics in these constructions. The study identifies four semantic types of these constructions – psycho-physiological, socio-economic, processual, and presence/absence. The analysis distinguishes between weakly stable constructions without idiomaticity that form open series (e.g., в печали ‘in sorrow’) and highly stable constructions with semantic fusion (e.g., в сердцах ‘in anger’). This research establishes the historical origins of modern Russian predicative phraseological units with analogous structure.
