Annotation: This paper deals with the history of the origin of the first (synaxar) edition of the literary monument “Torment of Theodore the Recruit” from Old Rus’. The first step towards solving the issues of poetics of the lives is the genesis of the origin of the legend of the saint and the analysis of the first Russian edition of the text. For the first time, a translation of the Greek text of “Torment” into Russian has been published; a comparative analysis of the original source with its Russian edition as part of the Old Russian Prologue, a synaxar Slavic church teaching collection intended for readings at divine services, has been carried out. The article focuses on the history of the scientific study of this book. In the Greek text of “Torments” discrepancies with the Russian monument were discovered and analysed. Attention is paid to the original passages in the Russian edition, which have no analogue in the original Greek manuscript. For example, the mention of geographical objects, an inserted fragment at the beginning of the text. The article focuses on the question of the origin of the saint’s byname. An analysis of discrepancies in the Greek and Russian editions of the monument indicates that the Russian translation of “Torment of Theodore the Recruit” with the inclusion of new details and original motifs became the basis for the Russian version of the text, which had subsequently existed in many versions and copies.
