Annotation: The article explores the role of medieval Derbent as the most important center of science and education in the North-Eastern Caucasus, in the dissemination of Persian book culture in Dagestan, in the formation and development of Persian-language literature by Dagestani authors. The materials for the study of the topic were written sources in Persian, stored in the library of the Derbent Juma-Mosque, and biobibliographical reference books compiled by medieval Dagestani scholars. The work uses analytical, contextual, and comparative methods of analysis. Due to historical and geographical realities, Southern Dagestan, particularly Derbent, was connected with Achaemenid, Sassanid, and, after the spread of Islam, Muslim Iran. The epigraphic inscriptions, epistolary sources, and handwritten and old-printed works in Persian that have been preserved in Dagestan are an indicator of the high level of development of science, education, and fine literature in the region. Dagestani scholars, who had been educated in Iranian scientific centres, promoted scientific knowledge by compiling textbooks and scientific works, copying manuscripts, and teaching at local maktabas and madrasas. Iranian scholars and writers who lived in Derbent, as well as their Dagestani counterparts in Iran, created a bridge of international literary connections that still exists today. After examining a wide range of diverse sources, we can conclude that Derbent connected Dagestan as a whole with the centres of culture and education in the Middle East. Derbent has historically played the role of a conduit for Iranian culture and literature among the Dagestani peoples
