- Annotation: Migration processes in the European Union have a significant impact on the lifestyle of the EU citizens. The role of the Muslim community in Europe has been growing, leading to the emergence of many new Muslim-related concepts in the media discourse. Using the German-language media discourse as an example, the authors of this article trace the changes in the vocabulary of the German language using the example of the lexeme “halal”. Through the analysis of speech structures, they reveal the attitudes of German-speaking society toward this recognised phenomenon of the Islamic culture. The study revealed that the concept of “halal” is the most frequent borrowing in the contemporary German-language press. The lexical unit is often used by journalists both literally and figuratively and is most often found in the following thematic groups: Food, Politics, Tourism, Cosmetics, and Lifestyle. The lexeme “halal”, which once denoted an Islamic culture-specific concept and had no equivalent in German, is acquiring new meanings in the German-language media discourse and adapting to the linguistic norms of the German language. The initially indeclinable adjective forms complex determinative noun compounds, most often using a hyphenated model, and less often without one. Many neologisms are of an occasional nature. Lexical units containing the component “halal” often have a neutral connotation, but when describing conflict situations involving migrants from Muslim countries, the German-language press also resolves a negative connotation.
