- Annotation: This article attempts to identify traces of rhetorical patterns, which had been used on the Vyg River, in Uglich schismatic literary monuments. A comparison of rhetoric patterns common in the Vyg River hermitage with various versions of the Chronicle of the «Tsar’s City of Uglich» («A brief, sweet, touching, and the most pitiful tale of destruction of the City of Uglich, called Ugol in old times,» – the chronicle discovered by Nikolay Barsov, and the chronicle from the Museum collection of the Russian State Library) was conducted during the course of the study. The main focus of the comparison includes the patterns and textual construction techniques, identified by Natal’ya Gur’yanova, and their reflection in the monument under study. The presence of structural and substantive corrections in various chronicler lists, which, according to Igor’ Sagnak, had been introduced by scribes from the Vyg River, who were in contact with Uglich schismatic community, is also confirmed. Igor’ Sagnak’s initial hypothesis is supported by factual material – the Chronicle of the «Tsar’s City of Uglich» appeals to the textual construction and organisation techniques characteristic of the Vyg River area. This is confirmed by the following sections of the manuscripts: those devoted to topic, pragmatology, chronology, and genealogy; and the organisation of the text according to the five-stage scheme proposed by the Rhetoric Codex from the Vyg River. This allows us to conclude that the Chronicle of the «Tsar’s City of Uglich» indeed derives from the literary tradition of the Vyg River schismatics in its principles of textual organisation and structure.
