Annotation: The article is the study of motifs of identity and alienation in Rose Ausländer’s German-language and English-language poems. The objective of the research is to identify similarities and differences in the choice of means of representation of these motifs. The method of interpreting artistic texts allowed to establish that the search for identity is one of the central motives in the poetess’s work. Using linguistic-stylistic analysis, the means of representing these motifs were determined, the comparative analysis allowed to compare the means of the representing the said motifs in German- and English-language poems. The research has revealed, that for representation the identity motif in German-language poems, R. Ausländer relies on biblical stories identifying herself with the Jewish people (the forty years wandering of the Jews in the desert under the leadership of Moses, the image of the serpent, which tempted Eve into eating the fruit from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge, and the expulsion from the Garden of Eden). In English-language poems, R. Ausländer conveys the image of the modern mechanised world, considering herself to be part of it. The poetess conveys the alienation motif in German-language poems through the images of “voiceless” people without a homeland and of “King Nobody”, a wanderer who has lost his roots. In German-language poems, the alienation motif is revealed through the tragedy of the modern world: through the loss of connection with nature, origins, and the loss of importance of people’s internal world.
Keywords: motifs in poetry, alienation motif, search for self-identity, Rose Ausländer’s poetry, post-war German poetry.
