Annotation: The study interprets media competency as the goal of media education and considers it an indisputable condition for the socialisation of an individual in modern society, an indicator of the individual’s ability to transform in the context of a rapidly changing ethnic and cultural environment and social and economic space. The paper develops a case study of “media competency of linguistic personality” within the framework of the modern scientific and educational environment. Six structural components of the “media competency of linguistic personality” case study are identified and described – relevance, typicality of the situation in real life; presence of a problem (with actualisation of the linguistic block of problems); debatable nature, alternative solutions, and evaluation. The case study method allowed us to 1) position media competency as a phenomenon that includes a set of technological and linguistic skills and abilities, critical thinking and creativity, legality, and psychological safety of the individual; 2) determine the significance of linguistic, communicative and linguacultural competences within the framework of linguistic disciplines (stylistics, genre studies, discourse studies, communicative linguistics, linguocultural studies, conceptology) and 3) demonstrate the emergence of the problem to a new level – the transition to fundamental interdisciplinary research of the phenomenon of society mediatisation in general, and the processes of media activity (media consumption, media behaviour, media preferences) in the modern scientific and educational environment in particular.
