Annotation: The prime aim of the study is to identify the representation forms of the dual world principle within the context of postmodern worldview in the play “Getting Outˮ by contemporary American playwright Marsha Norman. The author examines the diachronic transformation of dual world principle in literary works by the writers of the 19th – 21st centuries. Changes in the reception of this category in the well-known artistic and philosophical systems (Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism) are formulated. The following components of Marsha Norman’s play are analysed – chronotope, imagery, intertextual connections to cultural and historical facts at the level of plot development (Christian subtext), temporality (parallel action, dramatisation of the past), and social issues (a marginalised hero with uncertain fate). These elements of dramatic discourse are examined in relation to the main features of Postmodernism. The article concludes that the forms of the dual world principle, functioning interrelatedly in the composition of the play “Getting Outˮ, are the spatial-temporal one and the Doppelganger motif. In consideration of the play principal storyline the author confirms the characteristic postmodern assertion about the flexibility and plurality of literary characters’ inner-self. According to the latter the individual ceases to be conceived of as a stable subject with an indivisible identity structure.
Keywords: dual world principle, Doppelganger motif, multiple identity, postmodernism.
