- Annotation: With his first historical chronicle play, Alexander Ostrovsky inserted himself into the heated debates of the early 1860s concerning the foundations of the people’s life and their self-governance. The authors of the article reveal the specifics of the playwright’s historiosophical position, whose originality was predetermined by reference to historical documents from the 16th and 17th centuries. For the first time in Ostrovsky studies, the article has asserted that Ostrovsky’s address to the events of the 17th century is linked to his concept of a fundamental change in the people’s worldview that occurred during the Time of Troubles, when there was a transition from a fear of God’s judgement to an awareness of one’s own guilt and responsibility for unfolding events. For the first time the evangelical context of the play was analysed, the introduction of which was due to the desire of the dramatist to define an ideal that contributes to the formation of an “image of the future”.
