- Annotation: The article is devoted to the history of the monument “The Torment of Theodore the Recruit” of the Old Rus’ as part of the Verse prologue, a synaxarium of Church Slavonic educational collection translated into the Balkans during the second era of South Slavic influence. It examines the text of the martyrium as part of the Serbian and Bulgarian manuscripts of the 14th to 15th centuries, and it conducts a comparative analysis of the South Slavic versions of the monument with its Russian version as part of the Verse prologue of the Old Rus’ as part of the Extended version. When comparing the texts, significant discrepancies were discovered. New geographical designations appear in the martyriums as part of the Verse prologue, which were absent from the Simple Prologue. The South Slavic versions are distinguished by the presence of detailed descriptions of the saint’s torture. Of particular importance are the elements that are absent from the supposed Greek prototype of the Verse prologue – the Synaxarion of the Church of Constantinople. Thus, evaluative vocabulary appears, reflecting the negative attitude of the copyists towards the pagan Greeks. As a result of all the adjustments made, “The Torment of Theodore the Recruit” was transformed into a unique work, combining elements of ancient Synaxarion’s texts with fragments from other sources, which makes it a striking example of literary contamination.
