- Annotation: The article discusses the problems of the stylistics of the Russian language as a doctrine of literary speech in the past and present. An analytical review of textbooks and monographs on this topic is given for the first time. The author mention that they have accumulated more than a century of scientific and practical experience in working on the word in its various guises: a word as a metaphor, a word as a norm, oratorical and business speech, a prose and poetic word, folklore, etc. The key problems of stylistics are considered. It shows how the views of scientists were formed, which scientific schools were born and continue to function in XX–XXI centuries. The main stylistic markers are identified and justified. The problems of modern research in this field in Russia are discussed by way of scientific reflections. The emphasis is placed on the need to popularize the stylistic heritage of scientists-philologists. The value of their theoretical developments for describing and systematizing relevant ideas and stylistic experiments of the 21st century is emphasized. The practical significance of this direction is noted, first of all, in education, in improving the quality of Russian language proficiency not only in a utilitarian and everyday sense, but also in an artistic, aesthetic, historical and cultural one. Attention is drawn to the fact that “The Stylistic Heritage” series publishes an outstanding linguistic works, both classical (A.A. Potebnya, A.A. Shakhmatov, V.I. Chernyshev, A.M. Peshkovsky, L.V. Shcherba, B.V. Tomashevsky, G.O. Vinokur, etc.) and works by modern authors studying new aspects of communications (N.I. Formanovskaya, N.V. Zarva, I.V. Arnold, D.N. Shmelev, V.V. Odintsov, E.A. Zemskaya and others).
