Annotation: The article deals with the existential issues raised in the collection of short stories “Flights of Love” (“Liebesflüchten”, 2000) by Bernhard Schlink, one of the key contemporary writers from Germany. The main ideas developed in the stories are considered with the support of the works by the leading representatives of existential philosophy (Martin Heidegger, Karl Theodor Jaspers, Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre, Albert Camus) and in the context of traditions started by the German existentialist writers. Particular attention is paid to the problem of authentic and inauthentic existence. In existential philosophy, the idea of authenticity means that one has to create oneself and act in line with this self, while inauthenticity, in contrast, is connected with a rejection of one’s self-identity and freedom to meet someone else’s expectations and earn more social approval. Bernhard Schlink reveals the difficulty of this choice showing his characters in a border situation, which suddenly uncovers the illusiveness of their imaginary welfare. The ideas related to the existential issues of “Flights of Love” are typical for the all works of Bernhard Schlink, and it allows seeing an ideological and thematic proximity of short stories to his novels.
