- Annotation: The article examines the specifics of the implementation of the mythologeme “genius” in the work of E.T.A. Hoffman. The elements of this mythologeme associated with the achievement of an ideal world are highlighted, namely: the problem of the nature of genius (antagonism of genius and philistine; birth or childhood trauma, which leads to a changed perception of the world around; ambivalence of the good and evil principles in genius; the problem of the gender identity of genius), the problem of the relationship between genius and femininity (romantic love as a source of inspiration), the motif of seduction of the creator by the devil, the issue of the return of art to the bosom of Christianity, as well as the motif of creative emancipation through madness. It is concluded that the mythologeme “genius” in the work of E.T.A. Hoffman accumulates the exceptional qualities leading to “soaring” of the spirit of the artist/musician and lead to communion with the ideal, and it represents a key milestone in the development of romantic ideas about the essence of genius.
