Annotation: The theme of identity and multiculturalism is a central one in contemporary literary studies. It has been studied by both postcolonial theory and cultural studies and multiculturalism. The research’s novelty lies in its rethinking of the key concepts of multiculturalism and identity in the work through the lens of contemporary literary approaches. It proposes examining multiculturalism not as diversity, but as a system for managing differences, and the construction of identity not through resistance to colonialism, but through religious sects, virtual reality, and scientific ideas (the mouse project). Topicality of the research lies in its attempt to understand the historical roots of contemporary identity conflicts and to test postcolonial and decolonial theories on literary material.
Keywords: identity, multiculturalism, hybridity, polyphony, colonial past, immigrant.
