- Annotation: The article is described the preconditions of creations of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. Academic Joseph Orbeli went the way from the chairman of the Armenian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (the ArmBAS) to the first president and organiser of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. This research is based mainly on the archive documents, which are kept in the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences St. Petersburg Branch. The important archive Joseph Orbeli’s fond lets to follow the way of creation the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. The research gives the activity characteristic and shows the achievements of the ArmBAS subdivisions – Chemical Institute, Botanical Institute, Institute of History. In this work it is shown the unambiguous positive attitude of Vladimir Komarov, the President of the Academy of Sciences of USSR, to the ArmBAS science work, that was the one of the reasons to transform this branch to the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. Joseph Orbeli’s letter to Andrey Vyshinsky is also demonstrated the great Academic interest and state power interest in the development of the science in the Armenian Republic. Organising the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR was being developed during repelling the Axis aggression against the USSR. The interrelationship of these events is emphasised in this article. Surviving the hardest months of the Blockade of Leningrad, Joseph Orbeli was the brilliant representative of the academic science, Possessing the organiser’s talents like no one else, he realised the meaning of the science development in all branches, in particular, in the Armenian Republic. The creation of such organisations as the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR helped to decide the all-Union aims.
