- Annotation: The article presents an analytical review of the scientific and biographical facts of the outstanding Russian Slavist A.M. Selishchev. The chronicle of his life is given through the prism of socio-political events and the formation of the scientist’s personality, from childhood to the period of the Great Patriotic War. Rare archival finds and data from little-known sources are used, showing the exceptional abilities of A.M. Selishchev and his dedication to scientific values. The article describes the initial stage of the scientist’s activity related to the study of languages and the historical and cultural substratum of the Balkan countries. Attention is drawn to the fact that during the revolutionary years A.M. Selishchev undertook an expedition with the aim of studying the society and language of the Old Believers. It is emphasized that he was a pioneer in the study of Siberian dialects. Special attention is paid to the cycle of sociolinguistic works of the 1920s and 1930s devoted to the analysis of the language of the new era. The events of the 1930s related to the Marrist attacks on A.M. Selishchev and the subsequent arrest and exile of the scientist in the so-called “Slavist Case” are highlighted. The fate of A.M. Selishchev is considered in detail after his return from the GULAG, as well as his philological and social activities during the Great Patriotic War to restore Slavic studies in the country. The data on honoring A.M. Selishchev in his small homeland, in the village of Volovo, and conferences in memory of the scientist held in the 2000s at the I.A. Bunin Yelets State University are presented. The facts of historical losses and finds are presented, paradoxes of the 21st century, which reflect the pains and hopes of our time. The essay ends with quotes from colleagues and associates of A.M. Selishchev, recreating the image of the amazing personality of the teacher and linguist, the creator of philological knowledge.
