- Annotation: The paper analyses the stylistic stratification of the vocabulary of the play “Without a Dowryˮ by Alexander Ostrovsky from a literary/colloquial perspective, as interpreted through the stages of its development in the works of Vladimir Lakshin and Svetlana Kaidash-Lakshina. The article authors continue their traditional trend of observation of the playwright’s artistic and stylistic mastery, relying primarily on the role of conditional conjunctions, diverse and frequent in the speech of the characters and able to serve as a powerful means of the text stylistic stratification. Considerable attention is also paid to the characteristics of lexical devices with literary/colloquial characteristics in the speech of all the characters in Ostrovsky’s play, which enriches its stylistic background and enhances the role of its stereotypical markers – conditional conjunctions. It is concluded that these qualities of the characters’ speech in the play serve as a reliable way of their individualisation in accordance with their social status and communication situation.
