Annotation: The article is devoted to the analysis of the Italian War of 1859, and is considered within the framework of Vadim Tsymburskiy’s concept of “super-long military cyclesˮ as a turning point in the evolution of military affair. Italy’s war against Austria became not only the main stage of national unification, but also an important milestone in the development of industrial wars. The focus is on military innovations - railways, new types of artillery, tactical reorganisation of the French infantry. The perception of these changes by the Russian military observer Mikhail Dragomirov, who described the characteristic features of military modernisation, is emphasised. Considerable attention is also paid to the subsequent understanding of the campaign in the work of Alexander Svechin. It is noted that these innovations consolidated the trends that first emerged in the Crimean War of 1853-1856. It is concluded that the Italian War of 1859 became a key “linkˮ in the major cycle of European military history.
