- Annotation: The article deals with a series of one-act absurdist plays written in the 1970s by the Polish playwright Slawomir Mrożek about the Fox, which is a typical modification of the anti-hero-trickster archetype within the framework of the attempt of remythologization, which is characteristic of the theater of the absurd. The transformation of the famous medieval epic in the above-mentioned cycle of plays about the Fox is investigated. The author takes into an account the research of such Polish specialists in study of this absurdist’s drama, as J. Błoński, A. Krajewska, M. Sugiera and H. Stephan. The emphasis is made on Mrożek’s postmodernist game through parody, irony and allegory in which the classic version of the plot loses its relevance due to the changes and upheavals that European society underwent in the mid-20th century. The thesis of the tragedy of European civilization is substantiated, which is embodied in the fate of the fox-victim. The conclusion is made about the general desutopization in the modern era and the postmodern exhaustion of tradition.
