- Annotation: The paper considers the rhetorical codes realised by alleothetes. The alleothete is a rhetorical device based on the relations of opposition, comparison, juxtaposition and contrast that arise between homonymous words. The semantic tension created by the derivatives determines a specific contrastive background in the perception of the text. The common seme, defined by a single root, adds a shade of illogicality to the contrast. Thanks to this, the influence and aesthetic effect are strengthened. Expression is built on the contact use of homogeneous, consonant words. The understanding of the rhetorical code is connected with the emotional evaluation of rhetorical techniques and the fulfilment of the speaker’s rhetorical task. The rhetorical code consists of various linguistic units. When analysing the code, the indicators of grammatical properties are studied: the peculiarities of the sentence scheme, the specifics of the implementation of grammatical categories. Semantic changes in lexemes determine the content parameter of the code. It is also important to consider the presence of rhetorical devices in the text, the general architecture of the work. The expressive and figurative possibilities of rhetorical devices are conditioned by the thematic factor and the communicative situation. The discursive character of the text and its genre are of particular importance. The rhetorical code of contrastive disjunction is modelled by contrasting homonymous words. The reader’s attention is drawn to the emotional sphere, to the feelings, experiences, representations of the character. The interpretation of the code helps to establish an indirect link between the actor and the recipient. In a work of fiction, code interpretation becomes a basic mechanism for understanding the artistic task.
