- Annotation: This article examines the institutional development of statistical research in Russia and the pivotal role played by the Academy of Sciences in fostering this emerging discipline during the early 19th century. The analysis focuses on the initiatives of Russian scholars, particularly Heinrich Friedrich von Storch and Carl Theodor Hermann, to create specialised statistical journals. Using published sources and archival documents, the study reconstructs the history of Russia’s first statistical periodicals, including’s “Russland unter Alexander Iˮ by von Storch and “Statistical Journalˮ by Hermann. It provides a detailed account of their establishment, unique features, intended audience, and the factors that led to their eventual cessation. The article argues that these early publications were instrumental in cultivating scholarly interest in statistics among government officials and intellectuals, both in urban centers and provincial areas. They also contributed to the recognition of statistics as a critical tool for state governance and laid the groundwork for departmental statistical periodicals. Furthermore, the study highlights efforts of Academician Peter von Köppen to revive statistical publishing at the Academy, drawing on the achievements of his predecessors and international models. Included in the appendix is the first publication of “The Proposal by Peter von Köppen and Konstantin Veselovskiy on Publishing «Statistical Materials for Understanding Russia»ˮ (1854). This document offers valuable insights into the challenges and aspirations surrounding academic statistical periodicals in mid-19th century Russia.
