- Annotation: The present study is devoted to organising the Mineralogical Museum, established in 1902 at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute thanks to the activities of Franz Yu. Levinson-Lessing. The features of the museum’s location and operation, its prominent representatives and their contribution to the study of mineralogy in the early 20th century’s Russia are considered. The authors considered one of the tasks to be the analysis not only of the translation of the past into the present characteristic of museums, but also of the applied aspect, when the Mineralogical Museum contributed to the full-fledged education of students of St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute and provided acquaintance with the advanced achievements of science in a practical sense. In this case, when creating a museum as an applied institution, importance of mineralogy for the development of the polytechnic school of the metallurgical department of the SPbPU comes to the fore. In general, the mineralogical museum occupied an important place in the structure of St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, provided training for metallurgists, as well as polytechnic personnel to study the Russian regions, in the direction of economic, geographical and geological surveys.
