- Annotation: Book review: Abukayeva L.A. The conceptual sphere of the Mari ethnic religion: a monograph. Yoshkar-Ola, Publ. house of Vasil’yev Mari Institute of Language, Literature and History, 2024, 364 p. The monograph of the chief researcher Lyubov’ Abukayeva, which presents the basic religious concepts of Mari ethnic religion, was published in Vasil’yev Mari Institute of Language, Literature and History in 2024. Mari folk spiritual culture, its types, genres and forms – verbal (lexicon, phraseology, grammar, genres of oral folkish art, sacred texts), actional (rituals) and mental (beliefs) – are researched. On the basis of the complex analysis of texts of Mari prayers, various genres of Mari folklore and rituals, the features of concepts are revealed. юмо ‘god’, ото / кӱсото ‘sacred / prayer groove’, онапу ‘sacred / holy tree’, кумалтыш ‘praying rite’, перке ‘abundance, affluence, good fortune, success, goodness, prosperity’, шулык ‘health / vitality / wellbeing / happiness’, серлагыш ‘protection / divine grace’. The conceptual zone of concepts, their key derivatives and synonyms are described. The peculiarity of lexical, grammatical, paremiological and lexicographic representation of traditional religious concepts of the Mari people and their symbolically significant functions are noted. The practical value of the monograph lies in the possibility of using the methodology of analysing the ways and means of verbalising religious concepts for the linguistic reconstruction of fragments of both Mari ethnic religions and culture as a whole.
