Annotation: The article offers a comparison of two ‟continuations” of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “Anna Karenina”, carried out by Mikhail Gromeka and Konstatin Leontiev in a critical study and an article, respectively. It is shown that the young and talented critic Gromeka tried to present in his work a unique adaptation of the novel, not only explaining many plot points to readers, but also showing the spiritual and moral search of the main character Konstantin Levin and Leo Tolstoy himself. Gromeka highly valued the journalistic works of Tolstoy in the later years, he asserts the idea of “one Tolstoy”, a consistent and harmonious development of the writer’s views. Leontiev objected to Gromeka and created a different development of the fates of the heroes in his short article, placing Count Alexei Vronsky, a secular, brilliant man, who, in the critic’s opinion, was the support of the monarchy, above Tolstoy and Levin.
Keywords: Leo Tolstoy, Mikhail Gromeka, Konstantin Leontiev, novel “Anna Karenina”, adaptation, novel continuation, critical responses, fates of heroes.
